Sr. Research Data Analyst

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University (SKCCC) is seeking a talented senior research data analyst for an open position. This role will provide support to the SKCCC through the design, creation, and maintenance of resources that increase data accessibility and insights for the research community, with a specific focus on supporting the Clinical Trial Organization (CTO). The position will provide leadership and coordination of team members on multiple projects assigned, across research areas, utilizing technical and subject matter expertise to propose and implement innovative solutions that provide actionable insights to operational leaders, increase data literacy, and promote a data-driven culture at SKCCC. All areas of responsibility listed below are essential to the satisfactory performance of this position by applicants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Partner with stakeholders to develop research data strategies, create research data-related objectives and milestones, and direct team activities
  • Lead the creation of interactive Shiny applications and other visual reports to aid the preparation of publications, presentations, grant applications, and overall SKCCC strategy
  • Understand and integrate complex research data from disparate data sources based on project-specific needs
  • Mentors less experienced staff members on complex research data systems and data reporting to create a community environment
  • Provide actionable research insights to operational leaders through the development of robust analytic solutions
  • Build strong relationships with the SKCCC research community to determine changing needs, gaps, and areas for improvement
  • Provide research data acquisition, data mining, and analytic support, while clearly reporting results to a variety of audiences
  • Develop custom tools and reports in support of research data management requirements
  • Aid in the identification and implementation of novel platforms that would enhance and enable SKCCC research projects
  • Educate the research population on the available support and platforms provided
  • Troubleshoot issues across projects, provide feedback and areas for improvement
  • Support researchers by providing subject knowledge and solutions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES needed in addition to Essential Functions:

  • Experience with Posit and Shiny application development necessary
  • Experience with flexdashboard
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL, Oracle), programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, PHP)
  • Ability to work independently to handle organize and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously
  • A firm understanding of informatics and a background in bioinformatics, data science, or related field
  • Outstanding communication skills, ability to interact and impart information clearly to an audience with varying backgrounds
  • Ability to process biomedical data from various sources
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn new technologies when necessary
  • Ability to mentors junior staff
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelors Degree in biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, or related field EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum at least 7 years of professional level experience and/or post-doctoral training in biomedical informatics
  • Experience with the RStudio software stack (Shiny, R Markdown, Connect)
  • Experience analyzing research data in a hospital or healthcare environment
  • Strong background in oncology, cancer biology, molecular biology, or related field
  • Experience with data mining and data analysis; Experience with relational databases
  • Must have ability to communicate, prioritize, and organize projects among a broad spectrum of focuses
BONUS CONSIDERATIONS:
  • A Masters Degree in biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, or related field
  • Experience with CTMS, Tumor Registry, EMR, or other healthcare related systems
  • Experience with web design (HTML, CSS, etc)
  • Experience in cancer research environment
