The Financial Counselor registers patients by securing appropriate patient and insurance information; ensuring that registration data is correct and accurate; validating insurance eligibility; collecting co-payments; and entering information into appropriate systems. The Financial Counselor provides quality customer service to patients of all ages, their families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians and co-workers ensuring everyone is treated courteously, quickly and with respect.

The Financial Counselor assesses patient financial responsibility through price estimation, providing benefit education for all insured and uninsured patients, and assists patients in securing financial assistance and applicable public benefit options. The Financial Counselor accepts patient payments, is a back-up to the financial counselor/cashier where applicable, and reconciles accounts in an unbilled status.

Education Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education/Training Preferred:
Associate or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or closely related field from an accredited program.

Level and Type of Experience Required:
Minimum two years of experience requiring customer service skills and patient/customer centered focus.
Previous experience with computers, Microsoft Office software and navigating the Internet.

Level and Type of Experience Preferred:
Previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting.
Previous work experience in a healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology.
Experience with medical insurance.
Experience with appointment registration.

Independent Actions Required:
Must be able to problem solve and take appropriate action when necessary to make referrals to outside resources.
Ability to analyze financial data to determine documents needed for application approval and/or to establish appropriate payment arrangements.
Performs daily activities with minimal supervision.
Functions in a self-directed manner to accomplish routine activities.
Notifies supervisor, immediately, of issues involving violation of VCUHS policies or procedures.

Additional position requirements:
Incumbents may be required to work extended hours based on organizational need.
Incumbents are considered essential personnel and expected to report to work as assigned.
Overtime, shift rotations and/or weekend assignments as scheduled or on as needed basis.
