Summary

Provides basic nursing care to patients and assists with maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. Supports patient care throughout nursing areas, and is responsible for the safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services and appropriate documentation of services. Provides the services of a watcher for any patient on a patient care unit who has been assessed to require constant observation in order to maximize his/her safety. Performs clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit.

Job Duties

  • Assists with or transports patients as necessary according to proper techniques of body mechanics to protect patient and personal safety.
  • Ensures an adequate level of cleanliness, functioning equipment and unit supplies.
  • Measures and accurately records vital signs, height, weight, intakes, and outputs in a timely manner and reports all variations from normal.
  • Provides care to specific patient populations (neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric) as defined by level of care required, technology utilized and department scope of care.
  • Displays a calm and caring approach with patients, visitors, and coworkers and responds in a friendly and cooperative manner and demonstrates an awareness and respect for patient rights.
  • Documents care provided as assigned in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains a neat and clean environment, i.e., over bed table, bedside stand, patient room, supply areas and unit work areas.
  • Performs EKG if applicable on nursing unit and/or shift, one-to-one observations on suicide patients as assigned, and other duties as required in relation to function.
  • Plans for and prepares patient for transport, prepares patient care area for receiving patients for admission, post-op, emergencies, transfers and discharges.
  • Prepares patient for meals, serves and removes food trays, assists with meals/feeds patients and distributes water and nourishment according to patient needs.
  • Issues general nursing care such as positioning, lifting, turning, ambulating patients. Applies anti-embolism stockings and devices, prosthetics, orthotics, and traction devices.
  • Provides patient's hygiene needs as assigned, i.e., bathing, cleaning mouth and teeth, combing hair, shaving, dressing patient, discontinuing urinary catheters, and changing linens, as well as toileting. Applies hot/cold packs and assists other health team members with procedures.
  • Delivers post-mortem care and assists in transporting bodies to the morgue.
  • Receives and contributes pertinent information at shift report, i.e., patient status, unit activity and condition, incomplete work assignment, etc as indicated in clinical care team guidelines.
  • Reports any treatments, results, observations, patient complaints and pertinent information regarding the condition of patients to the charge nurse.
  • Recognizes how the nursing assistant position and duties relate to the overall function of the hospital in view of total patient care.
  • Projects a positive image of the medical center with a focus on customer/stakeholder relations, i.e., appearance, communication, demeanor.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient-hospital or physician-related information in adherence with Lehigh Valley Hospital performance standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Less than 1 year Six months recent experience in direct provision of patient care activities, including treatments and/or diagnostic studies. or
  • Successful completion of LVHN's inexperienced technical partner course.
  • Astute observation skills to monitor patients physical and mental health.
  • Ability to follow set rules and protocol.
  • Ability to interact with stakeholders (patients, family, staff, providers, payors, and community).
  • Time management and organizational skills with limited supervision.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania within 90 Days

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Enrolled in an ADN program
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
