Job Summary

The primary function of this position is to serve as the Safety Officer for the Schools of Medicine, Davis campus. The incumbent responsibility is to ensure department, principal investigator and supervisor safety program responsibilities are fulfilled, including the development, implementation, facilitation, and coordination of all research and education safety management programs, which includes but is not limited to, Biological Safety, Chemical/Laboratory Safety, Environmental Protection, Hazardous Material Management, Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Management, Compliance Monitoring, and Training for the Davis and Sacramento campus (non-hospital/clinic) units. This includes providing administrative supervision and leadership as well as acting as the liaison with EH&S. The incumbent coordinates with UCD/UCDH EH&S and serves as the department representative during regulatory inspections (federal, state and local regulatory agencies), and other compliance related activities. The incumbent will be the primary contact and consultant for responding to routine service requests from departments, faculty, staff and students.

The incumbent will regularly perform, analyze, document, and report findings of on-site inspections, accident and injury reports, workplace hazards, preventative safety activities, and other audits conducted for academic research and education units. The incumbent will develop and implement policies for ensuring compliance and preventative safety procedures as required. The incumbent will assist the SOM regarding health and safety issues concerning laboratory renovations, and new research building projects, and assist, coordinate, and provide back-up coverage for the Sacramento campus Safety Officer. The incumbent will be a standing member of the UCDHS Safety and Emergency Management Committees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated experience working with federal, state and local laws and regulations and procedures pertaining to EH&S safety programs.
  • Extensive knowledge, skills and experience with federal, state and local laws and regulations, and UCD/UCDH policies and procedures pertaining to EH&S safety programs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with various UC, UCD, UCDH departments and committees, as well as, the ability to work with federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex issues to administrators, faculty, staff, students and visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively explain and instruct employees In simple terms in the area of health and safety.
  • Ability to conduct educational seminars and classes on a variety of topics to departmental employees.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret and apply policies and procedures to various situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and independently, make informed decisions and implement a course of action under general direction.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills to expertly resolve conflicts with groups and/or individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests.
  • Strong organizational skills to assume independent responsibility for coordinating and completing complex projects requiring interaction with many individuals and/or groups.
  • Flexible and able to work in a team format to achieve goals.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments in order to complete them in a timely manner, especially when there are changes in workload, timeline pressures or deadlines. competing requirements and changes in work assignments.
  • Skill in managing and implementing database systems used to generate reports. analyze data and develop inventory information.
  • Skill to use basic computer programs, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory/facility operations, and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Safety Professional (CSP) or Industrial Hygienist (CIH), registration as an Environmental Health Specialist (REHS).
  • Advanced degree in Health & Safety, or equivalent education and job experience in an academic teaching and research setting is desirable.
  • Experience with UCD/UCDH policies and procedures pertaining to EH&S safety programs in working collaboratively with various UC, UCD, UCDH departments and committees, as well as with federal, state and local regulatory agencies.

Department Overview

The Safety Management program at UC Davis School of Medicine is responsible for providing a safe workplace by minimizing the potential hazards to faculty, staff, students and visitors. The Safety Management program sets the standards for safety management and complements individual laboratory safety programs and activities.

As Safety Officers, our main role is to develop, implement, and maintain the School of Medicine's safety programs. We collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to improve the safety culture and regulatory compliance. We serve as a liaison between our researchers, campus Environmental Health and Safety, and outside regulatory agencies. Our team is always eager to provide our technical expertise and assist labs identify ways to mitigate hazards.
