Texas Oncology is looking for an Remote Area Lab Manager to join our team! This position will support the Central Texas region. It is strongly preferred that candidate reside in Austin, Texas or San Antonio, Texas. There will be up to 10% travel within the region.

What does the Area Lab Manager do?

Provides technical supervision for multiple laboratories (4 or more) and is accountable for the direction and organization of these. Advises the Executive Director and Sr VP as needed as to the clinical needs, issues, and policies of lab. Recommends organizational objectives to assure quality patient testing. Provides financial analyses to assure profitability of labs as needed. Maintains overall responsibility for laboratory operations and activities for laboratories under his or her technical supervision. Provides direct supervision to lab staff and supervisors as needed. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversees the clinical operations of all labs in assigned areas of responsibility to include all facets of lab testing to include Quality Control, Quality Assurance and Proficiency Testing.
  • Reviews all Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Proficiency Testing for assigned labs and those labs with a supervisor that does not meet the qualifications of a technical supervisor according to CLIA.
  • Maintains awareness of, and compliance with, state and federal regulations regarding laboratory operations and licensing.
  • Supervises the work of laboratory staff. Directs the development and evaluation of lab personnel performance objectives and goals each year. Develops performance expectations and departmental objectives for clinical staff to ensure efficiency and profitability. Assists employees and supervisors to solve performance problems through performance review, feedback and referral to counseling as may be appropriate.
  • Establishes procedures and policies for Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Proficiency Testing Reviews. Oversees, evaluates, selects, and validates test methods. Participates in writing procedures and policies to be used throughout the practice.
  • Evaluates qualifications of potential employees; interviews and hires as needed. Assures that all employees meet CLIA and COLA requirements for testing personnel. Trains or assigns training of laboratory personnel. Provides Continuing Education opportunities and monitors employee participation.
  • Assists in the development, preparation, and implementation of budgetary needs for laboratory services. Evaluates vendor bids for new laboratory equipment for financial feasibility, profitability, and use within our practice labs. Acts as liaison between vendor and corporate purchasing to initiate a corporate contract for pricing for the whole network.
  • Directs the correct use of charge codes and CPT codes, educating all clinical lab staff in the correct documentation per reimbursement guidelines.
  • Performs cost analyses on major equipment being considered for purchase and advises the Executive Director and Practice Administrators as to the efficiency and profitability.
  • Serves as liaison with reference labs and vendor customer service representative to assure the best possible service and pricing to all our practice labs

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following background and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science field.
  • Minimum seven (7) years experience in laboratory testing, including at least five (5) years in a supervisory capacity.
  • ASCP or equivalent certification required.
  • Current state licensure.

Requires sitting/standing for extensive periods of time with the use hands to finger, handle, or feel and arms to reach or carry. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision, color perception and hearing to normal range. Requires legible handwriting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to direct contact with patients with potential for exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, or transmittable infections. Direct contact with corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles and open flames. Work will require occasional travel by air or automobile, approximately 25% of time.
