Job Summary:

The Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks candidates for an open rank faculty position in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics as part of the Wisconsin RISE-Earth initiative (https://rise.wisc.edu/rise-earth/). Exceptional candidates in all areas related to nuclear engineering applications will be considered.

The department has identified a strategic priority in integrated nuclear science experiments and in the understanding of the integrated behavior of nuclear technology components and systems in fission or fusion nuclear environments. Nuclear science experiments could include, but are not limited to instrumentation, diagnostics, nuclear data collection, nuclear validation experiments, preparation of benchmarks, isotope production, activation analysis, shielding, radiography, radiolysis, tritium generation, permeation and management, with applications across the full scope of fission and fusion systems for energy production, research, etc. Demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching in these or related areas is desired. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in experimental approaches to fission and/or fusion neutron science.

The new hire will have a tenure home in the Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics and will join a faculty community in the Institute for Nuclear Energy Systems with diverse research interests related to nuclear energy applications. As a member of a vibrant nuclear engineering research community, the new hire will have many opportunities to establish collaborations with both experimental and computational research groups already active on the UW campus. Faculty members are expected to establish and maintain a world-class graduate research program, teach courses, contribute to the education and professional development of a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in department, college, university, and appropriate community and professional service activities.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics (NEEP) in the College of Engineering at UW-Madison enrolls approximately 150 undergraduate students and over 125 MS and PhD graduate students from within the state of Wisconsin and from all over the world. The Department has 12 Primary Faculty, 11 Affiliate Faculty who can serve as advisors of NEEP graduate students, and multiple Teaching Faculty, Emeritus Faculty, and Instructional Staff.

Required
PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Physics, Physics or a closely related field.


Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record, a vision for an innovative, significant and impactful research program, the skills to implement it, and a commitment to high quality and inclusive undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring. The candidate's experience and professional accomplishments will be commensurate with the rank sought. Associate and Full Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and the College of Engineering.

This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative. Through accelerated and strategic faculty hiring, research infrastructure enhancement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and increased student and educational opportunities, RISE addresses complex societal challenges of importance to the state, nation and world. Building on UW-Madison's strengths, RISE expands the University's successful track record of connecting with communities and industry on collaborative solutions.

Over the next three academic years, UW-Madison will substantially increase current hiring levels, bringing 150 new RISE faculty to campus. Candidates hired through RISE will join a community of scholars working across disciplines, schools and colleges on research, teaching and outreach endeavors. The community will engage regularly in venues such as seminar series and colloquia to share ongoing projects and identify opportunities to work together.
