Job Overview

The Senior Clinical Molecular Geneticist is an integral part of the Children's Hospital Colorado Precision Diagnostics Laboratory team. Advancing our understanding of genomics and for providing accurate interpretation of genomics data for effective diagnoses and treatment of our patients. Works with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including laboratory technologist, variant analysts, software engineers, data analysts, genetic counselors, scientific directors, and physicians to provide clinical expertise in interpretation of genomics laboratory test results with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports.

Department: Precision Diagnostic PDX Lab
Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, work hours may vary based on the needs of the department. This position has the potential to be fully remote if applicant is located within CHCO hiring region.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION - Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.) in Molecular Genetics, Human Genetics, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • EXPERIENCE - Five (5) years' experience in molecular genetics variant analysis or case review and sign out in a clinical laboratory setting. Broad knowledge of genetic variant databases and their utility is essential with a basic knowledge of NGS wet-bench techniques, data quality, and bioinformatics tools.
  • EQUIVALENCY - Combination of education and/or clinical relevant experience: bachelor degree and fourteen (14) years or masters degree and ten (10) years.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) - For eligible candidate only - board certification by American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) is preferred upon hire or within 1 year.
  • Candidates with previous whole exome/genome clinical case sign out experience strongly preferred.

No direct patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Provides clinical expertise in interpretation of molecular genetics laboratory test results in accordance with ACMG standards and laboratory policies with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports from various testing methodologies including gene sequencing, whole exome sequencing, etc.
  2. Responsible for reporting of accurate clinical test results within established laboratory turn-around times.
  3. Works directly with variant analysis team to support robust and timely results review of laboratory results including supporting efficient variant prioritization, classification, and interpretation processes.
  4. Maintain documents and records: Ensure the documentation of patient information, test result is accurate and includes interpretation of genomic finding in the context of clinical presentation and recommendations per policy. Regarding patient confidentiality and data management, adhere to regulatory and ethical guidelines.
  5. Give regular feedback regarding workflows to support continuous improvement.
  6. Provide clinical consultation: Determine the likelihood of genetic conditions by analyzing the medical histories, family histories, and genetic information of patients.
  7. Collaborate with interprofessional teams: Provide comprehensive patient care in collaboration with physicians, genetic counselors, laboratory technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  8. Participate in team meetings and contributes to discussions regarding variant classification, patient diagnosis, and quality improvement initiatives. Participate in variant review conferences with clinical teams.
  9. Serve as a clinical consultant during the validation of new assays, with focus on ensuring the assay serves the anticipated clinical needs, development of assay content, and curation of data to support variant interpretation.
  10. Serve as a resource for clinical colleagues regarding questions about test results and testing capabilities and establish collaborative relationships with clinical teams. Provides clinical consultation regarding test results to referring providers or patients.
  11. Support laboratory quality through participation in proficiency testing and investigations of quality issues as requested by the operational team.
  12. Play an active role in the training staff, residents, and fellows through didactics, teaching during case review, mentorship for research projects, etc.
  13. Contribute to continuing education for technical staff.
  14. Participate in scholarly activity through case reports/series, laboratory focused projects, collaboration with clinical colleagues, etc. May presents scientific and educational posters/presentations to technical staff and colleagues, and at relevant professional meetings.
  15. Recognizes clinical testing technical needs, raises concerns to lab leadership when they emerge, and engages in problem-solving as needed. At the laboratory's technical level, makes recommendations to boost testing efficiency while controlling expenses for reagents, supplies, and technician time.

Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level. Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent. Understanding of laboratory quality measures and familiarity with CAP and CLIA regulations, and interpretation and reporting workflows

Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

Decision Making: Employee is responsible exercising judgment and discretion and is expected to efficiently apply approved guidelines to non-standardized cases that fall outside of defined guidelines of laboratory policies. Employee is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed to meet the established productivity metrics for the position.

Communication: Contacts with team members, clients, or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with clinical, scientific, and operational teams.

Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $130,499.55 to $195,749.32
Hourly Salary Range: $62.74 to $94.11
