We invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Middle, Secondary & K-12 Education ( MDSK) in the Cato College of Education. This 9-month, tenure-eligible position will begin in August 2025, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach students in the undergraduate and graduate programs. We seek a faculty colleague to join a high-achieving and dynamic department committed to preparing knowledgeable, effective, reflective, responsive, and collaborative professionals.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will bring a broad and inclusive perspective of urban education and play a pivotal role in supporting two innovative programs in the Cato College of Education- the Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Urban Education and the Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction in Urban Education, while also supporting the department's teacher licensure programs, as needed. Our programs aim to prepare future teachers and education professionals who deeply understand the critical issues necessary to effect transformative change in urban communities. Faculty in this department have the opportunity to inform curriculum, guide students' intellectual growth, engage in innovative research, and foster active learning environments. The selected applicant is expected to serve on Masters capstone projects and doctoral committees; maintain scholarly productivity in research, publications, and presentations; obtain external funds to support research activities; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in Program, Department, College, and University governance.
Minimum Experience/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. (earned by May 2025) in an appropriate field such as urban education, curriculum and instruction, and/or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring students at the undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.
  • Evidence of a deep understanding, and knowledge, of critical issues in urban education.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience (face-to-face and online).
  • Evidence of an active research agenda and record of scholarship (e.g., published and/or works in progress).
  • Understanding and commitment to the mission of the university, college, and department.
  • Ability to work collegially with others, including faculty, staff, and students.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in an urban school context.
  • Grant-writing experience.
  • Experience establishing community partnerships.
  • Demonstrated efforts in advocacy of student success.
