Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate II for NJMS- Psychiatry. The BRAINY-NJ (Brazilian Aging in New York - New Jersey) Study is led by Prof. Sharon Sanz Simon and is ongoing research of the Department of Psychiatry and the Herbert and Jacqueline Krieger Klein Alzheimer's Research Center at Rutgers Brain Health Institute. The BRAINY-NJ Study aims to investigate the risks and protective factors for Alzheimer's Disease and related Dementia ( ADRD) in Brazilian immigrants living in the NYC metropolitan area, especially in NY and NJ states. Under the direction of Prof. Sharon Sanz Simon, the candidate is responsible for the conduct of clinical, behavior and cognitive assessments of the study participants.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs various research activities related to collecting behavior/cognitive data.
  • Conducts telephone interviews (screening) and in-person assessments using behavior/lifestyle questionnaires and cognitive tests.
  • Conducts data collection independently, although training and supervision will be provided.
  • Participates, as needed, in community events that promote education on brain/mental health and assist with participant recruitment.
  • Participates in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology, and coordination of the analytical and procedural functions with the clinical and research areas to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Under supervision, assists in the conducting of a continuous program of research and development regarding the analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory, participates in the evaluation of the existing procedures, suggests revision where necessary, and proposes new procedures where required.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph. D. Degree in a relevant science or a Master's Degree in a relevant science plus three (3) years of related research experience in one of the following fields: neurosciences, gerontology/geriatrics, psychology or mental health-related area.
  • Fluency in Portuguese as the study assessments will target Portuguese speaking (Brazilian) immigrants. - Primary Source Verification: Interview in Portuguese.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Previous knowledge of cognitive testing is desired.
  • Should have previous experience demonstrating solid judgment, organizational, planning, coordination, time management, multi- tasking, and communication skills. RA2 will be trained in Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
  • Should be self-motivated and innovative with the ability to handle considerable and varied responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively and represent the university knowledgeably, articulately, and enthusiastically with an effective professional demeanor.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift at least 40lbs . Candidates must have an automobile driver's license for recruitment/assessment travel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers, printers, and light traffic). Must be able to work and cooperate with a broad spectrum of staff and public.
The study assessments may occur at Rutgers University - Newark at the Behavioral Health Sciences Building (located at 183 South Orange Avenue on the F-Level) or at the participant's home in the community.
