The Director of Communications has critical responsibilities for managing the direction, implementation, and ongoing evaluation for all strategic and editorial communications activities to support CMU's Tepper School of Business. This role is multi-faceted and strategic, and is a critical component to the Marketing and Communications function at Tepper. This ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent collaborative and communication skills; and have experience leading teams including full-time employees, freelancers and consultants, to achieve an organization's strategic objectives. The Director will also maintain and leverage partnerships with marketing and communications colleagues across Carnegie Mellon, particularly within the central function. We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced candidates who can establish and take action on clear priorities while remaining nimble and agile in a fast paced environment.

The following areas highlight the key responsibilities for the Director of Communications.

Editorial Leadership: Serve as editor for the school's alumni magazine and thought leadership website, ensuring content aligns with institutional goals and messaging. Develop and oversee Tepper's editorial calendar.

Strategic Communications: Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the school's reputation, increase visibility, and foster partnerships with industry, academia, and the public.

Reputation Building and Thought Leadership: Position the school as a leader in business education and research, working closely with faculty and administration to highlight groundbreaking work and key achievements.

Content Creation: Oversee the creation of news stories, research updates, and special communications projects, ensuring consistent, high-quality content that supports the school's mission.

Team Leadership and Collaboration: Lead, mentor, and develop a team responsible for communications across multiple platforms, fostering a collaborative and results-driven environment.

Media Relations and Public Relations: Lead a team responsible for proactive and reactive media relations efforts, managing relationships with key media outlets, and securing positive coverage of the school's initiatives, research, and faculty expertise.

Digital Strategy and Analytics: Lead a team responsible for web and digital projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, and utilize analytics to optimize content and engagement across digital platforms.

Social Media Management: Guide the team's development and execution of the school's social media strategy, enhancing engagement and reach through innovative content.

Executive Communications: In conjunction with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, oversee the creation of high-level communications for senior leadership, including speeches, talking points, and messages.

You should demonstrate:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong editorial skills with experience managing content for publications and digital platforms.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with others.

Qualifications and preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Experience in strategic communications, preferably in higher education and/or research institutions.
  • Expertise in media and public relations.
  • Expertise in executive communications is a plus.
  • Leadership experience managing teams and fostering collaboration.
  • Familiarity with digital tools, web analytics, and social media strategy.
  • Experience in handling crisis communications and managing reputational risks.
